Local wellness programs have expanded outdoor options this summer as residents seek no-cost fitness routines that fit around work and family schedules. Eugene Parks and Recreation has kept both routes open on Saturdays without entry fees, matching the city’s long-standing emphasis on accessible trails near the Willamette River and downtown core.

Two established routes

Alton Baker Park hosts its 5-kilometer loop along Pre’s Trail starting at 9 a.m., with the course passing the river path and returning through open fields near the University of Oregon. Skinner Butte Park runs its event from the base of the butte at the same time, using a flatter course that circles the park’s perimeter and crosses the adjacent footbridge into downtown. Both locations provide marked start areas and volunteer timers supplied through the national parkrun network.

Eugene Parks and Recreation recorded an average of 248 finishers across the two sites each week from January through June 2026. Registration remains free and requires only a one-time online barcode at parkrun.com, with results posted the same afternoon.

Practical steps for first-timers

Arrive 15 minutes early at either park to collect a barcode if needed, then follow the volunteer briefing at the start line. Runners of all speeds are welcome, and the events finish with coffee meetups at nearby cafes on High Street.
