Eugene walkers have shifted toward unmarked spurs off Crest Drive in the South Hills for their weekday fitness loops, cutting 20 minutes from typical commutes to Spencer Butte while adding elevation gains of 300 feet in under two miles.

Interest in these routes has grown since the City of Eugene updated its trail signage in spring 2025 to highlight resident-only access points, coinciding with a local push for daily outdoor activity amid rising summer temperatures that hit 88 degrees by mid-July.

South Hills spurs and riverbank detours

The first stretch begins at the gravel pullout past the 29th Avenue intersection with Crest Drive, where a narrow singletrack drops into a mixed fir and oak stand before climbing toward the old water tank site. A second option sits one mile east along the Willamette River in the Whiteaker neighborhood, where an informal path leaves the paved bike lane at the end of Van Buren Street and follows a gravel bar for 1.2 miles past blackberry thickets before rejoining the main river trail near the Owosso Bridge.

Both routes fall under the maintenance schedule of Eugene Parks and Recreation, which last cleared downed trees on the Crest Drive spur in March 2026 and added two new benches along the Van Buren gravel bar in June.

Usage data and access details

The 2025 Lane County Parks Survey recorded that 58 percent of Eugene adults walk or hike for exercise at least four days a week, yet only 12 percent reported leaving the five most-marked trailheads. No permits or fees apply to either hidden section, though the city asks visitors to stay on the established tread to protect native plantings restored in 2024.
